I was recently commissioned by Huck magazine to pay a visit to Santa Cruz and shoot my take on the area (with free creative range) and the Coldwater Classic contest sponsored by O’neill. While not much of a fan of contests, I had a great time and I found myself wandering East Cliff Drive and Pleasure Point snapping curious things over the course of a week here and there… then getting A.D.D. and paddling out at Cowells with my Junod log. All said and done I shot 3 or 4 rolls of 35mm film and a half dozen polaroids. I saw some great surfing, had some fun surf myself, and enjoyed the beachfront accomodations and amazing coffee houses in Santa Cruz with the leaves changing in the mountains and the sun rising over the mountains breaking thru the sea layer in the mornings. The piece will be running in early 2011, and there is talk of an art show being toured around the globe with pieces from myself and other photographers who shot at each location the contest stopped (Canada, Scotland, South Africa, Santa Cruz, and Tasmania). So far I’ve only viewed Mark Leary’s work from Scotland and was stoked at his non traditional take on covering a contest. He chose large format landscapes and portraits shot on sheets of film. My chosen tools were a 35mm with 50mm lens and a old polaroid land camera. I saw a drastic difference in the faster wave at the Lane with the contest and the hoopla around it versus the mellow peelers and stoked beginners at Cowells just several hundred yards away. Here are a couple of the photographs I took. More images to come after the piece runs.
